INDIANAPOLIS — Destiny Wells, Candidate for Indiana’s 7th Congressional District, issued the following statement after confirmation that BlackRock will lead a $33 billion purchase of AES’s parent company, taking it private.

Last week, Wells warned that acquisition reports warranted early transparency. The deal is now confirmed.

Congressman Andre Carson has publicly criticized the transaction following its announcement. However, Federal Election Commission filings show that Carson accepted campaign contributions from the corporate PACs of both BlackRock and AES in just the last months.

“Much blame can be cast toward Donald Trump for prioritizing corporations over everyday people,” Wells said. “But we also have to be honest: Congress, over time, has become captive to many of those same interests.”

AES serves a substantial portion of Marion County and Central Indiana. While the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission sets utility rates—not Congress—Wells said the timing of events raises legitimate concerns.

“How are Marion County ratepayers supposed to believe their interests come first when corporate PAC checks from AES and BlackRock are being deposited in Washington while a $33 billion deal affecting their electric utility moves forward?” Wells said.

“This is not about committee jurisdiction. It’s about independence.”

Wells emphasized that the issue is not whether a member of Congress votes on a utility merger. It is whether elected officials maintain independence from the corporations whose business decisions affect their constituents’ daily lives.

“When conversations are happening in Washington and corporate PAC checks are clearing at the same time, Hoosiers deserve transparency,” Wells said. “Speaking out after the deal is finalized is not the same as protecting constituents beforehand.”

Wells reiterated her pledge to reject corporate PAC money.

“There is a new wave of Democrats who believe it is time to cut corporate PAC donations out of politics altogether,” Wells said. “If we are serious about protecting families from rising utility costs, independence from corporate money is not optional—it is essential.”

“Energy powers our homes, our schools, and our small businesses,” Wells concluded. “Marion County families deserve leaders who put them first—before Wall Street, before corporate PACs, and before political convenience.”
